URBAN MEADOWS

Urban Meadows

Living in an urban center or the suburbs does not have to isolate you from the great panorama of nature all around. If you have a water-guzzling lawn, you can transform it into a suburban meadow by watering only 2 minutes per day during the dry season, or stop watering altogether. Practice selective weeding and remove anything you find unaesthetic. Toss wildflower seeds into the dry patches and cultivate clumps of seasonal grasses and flowers. By extending habitat into your garden, you welcome native moths, butterflies, and birds. As your meadow adapts to less water, it will change with the seasons.

If you live in an urban area, there is no end to the possibilities of bringing Nature into your home. Any window, rooftop, or container can be transformed into a meadow of native plants and grasses.  You can transform almost anything into a garden, such as a 1994 crack house in New York City that was transformed into a public garden. Within one season, you will see the return of birds seeking what you grow. To view some outstanding urban meadows, check out the metamorphosis of old railroad tracks at wwwthehighline.org. Send us a picture of your urban or suburban meadow and we will gladly post it. Let your garden go Wild By Nature!
